Ice Dams Explained by Bloomfield Construction

Transcription: This is Jeff from Bloomfield Construction here. I’m on the back side of this atrium. You can see the amount of ice that’s built up. The big problem is right here. What we’ve got is a dam that is stopping water from running out. Even though it’s 12 degrees out today, there is still water melting because of the sun. Look at the size that that thing, it’s about 12 inches tall, maybe thicker. You’ve got an asphalt roof here that comes down, this is glass so this is melting snow just from the heat inside. And we’ve got the sun here that’s melting snow. What it’s doing is causing water to form here. But it just can’t run out because this dam is stopping it. So it’s forcing its way back all the way up to that corner and running down inside the house. So the solution, I mean they’ve tried heat tape. You can see there frozen, they are not even working. This downspout is just plugged, all those gutters are plugged. Is to get this big block of ice off, but then also remove that snow that’s up above so that it doesn’t continue to melt and freeze again. Remove the snow, you eliminate the ice, you eliminate the ice dam. And that’s what we’ve got going on out here.
