What to do After a Home Insurance Loss

Damage to your home is a devastating time. From the unexpected repair costs to figuring out where your family is going to live – depending on the amount of damage – during the construction. Last month we discussed the steps required after you’ve experienced damage to your home from fire, excess water or wind; this month we want to take a look at the steps you should take after you’ve experienced a home insurance loss.

No matter the cause, it’s important to identify the source. If you’ve experienced water damage, locate the cause. Did it come from a pipe burst, system overflow or ice dam? Turning off the water source will temporarily help the situation, but the damage may have already been done. The moisture may have severely damaged your flooring and walls causing excess mold.

Once the source has been identified, the next step is to call in a professional restoration contractor. An expert will examine the damaged area, scope the loss, and then suggest the best practices to handle the issue. They should work with you and you insurance adjuster to ensure you get the coverage and repairs you are owed.

After the contractor has inspected the damage, the insurance company will review the account and request – in some cases require – you to take the necessary steps to keep the cause from reoccurring. Additionally, it’s important to document the damage. Take pictures of the source and damage for your records to share with the insurance companies. Once you have completed this step, contact your insurance company and submit your insurance loss.
