Preventing Wind Damage

Oakland County, Michigan isn’t typically prone tornados, but we do get our fair share of severe storms and high winds that can result in costly wind damage. And, though infrequent, tornados do occasionally wreak havoc on Michigan terrain.  Homes can be destroyed by fallen trees, decks ripped from homes and outdoor furniture can become a slingshot of destruction. Below are some preventative measures that home owners can do to prevent wind damage to your home.

6 Tips to Prevent Home Wind Damage

  1. Secure and anchor outdoor sheds to the ground, and bolt outdoor furniture to decks. This can help prevent them from flying through to air and causing excess damage. If bolting them down isn’t an option, be sure to put lawn furniture in a safe place, away from the wind, during heavy storms.
  2. Examine the exterior of your home for loose siding or bricks, and secure all doors with deadbolts and windstorm protection. Make sure shingles and drainpipes are also properly secured.
  3. Properly landscaping your home is another way to prevent wind damage from destroying your home. Place new trees or seeds far enough away from the house to avoid them from potentially crashing down and destroying your home. Though a newly planted tree may look nice next to your home, as it grows, it can increasingly become a hazard.
  4. Maintain trees throughout the year by cutting down loose branches that could shatter a window and check for diseases and insect infestations.
  5. Avoid using rocks within your landscaping.
  6. Reinforce garage doors; these are large and very heavy, but strong winds can damage or destroy them if they aren’t installed properly. If heavy winds manage to carry the door away, your home’s exterior could be badly damaged.
